Mark Knopfler - The Sultan of Swing

It’s like watching an artist in the act of creation. I’ve heard the term channeling and generally don’t put much stock in it but to watch this video and watch his face as he stoically withholds the rock grimace and stage antics yet as the music emerges through him he finally lets go, is swept away and just rides it. It’s nirvana!

Not the group, the place. He’s in it and he’s channeling this incredibly potent energy of sound and emotional release. As a guy who practiced bar chords by taping his finger to a pencil, rock and roll ain’t no Money for nothin so when you see someone whose fingers are a conduit to the soul of rock you recognize it for the gift that it truly is and take the time to appreciate and thank God for it.

Ok, and this is the Last One, Promise!

But all this does bring back precious memories. I got to talking about our trips to the beach in my last post about the Peanut Man, well another big part of our memories were the Dire Straits. We bought the CD and played it at least a million times during our trip. We bought a silver blue 1986 Honda Accord, our first new car as a young married couple. We figured one of us should have a car we could depend on so the Accord was it. The big hit song at the time was The Walk of Life but good friends of ours, John and Maureen, told us about The Sultans and 44 years later the Sultans are still Swinging. Honorable mention here to John Prine.  https://www.johnprine.com/
John Irons use to do a pretty great rendition of Hello in There and just the thought of us sitting around taking turns on the guitar and hearing John sing out, We had an apartment in the city and Me and Loretta liked livin there, brings a bitter sweet smile and a tear to my eye.
