Thoughts and priorities after Tess

End all unnecessary donations and subscriptions

Stop current credit card to stop all automatic billing
Notify Retirement about Tess
Thank- send money to Richard
Sell CRV or give it to Lauren
Clean out the house
Give jewelry and any clothes that work for Lauren
Give everything else away to Goodwill

Possibly volunteer at Hospice
Sign up for hospice thereapy
Look into being an Uber Driver
How would that effect insurance and can I actually do it

What I can do everyday
Walk - laurel green, Rhododendron Lake, Arboretum-Greek Restaurant- do that with Linda before she leaves
Play Chess, online and look into local club
Buddhism- daily thoughts
Stop being your own worst enemy
Accept the fact that some people actually hate, but most people mean well and most hate is from fear
Take your time with everything you do
Think before you speak or act
Be happy that you had love and had one person to love in your life
What is important now is Lauren
Lauren and Sam, Nolan and Wes
With people, you don’t need to entertain them
People mostly want to be recognized and validated including you
Let things happen
Let people be themselves
All things, including death, will come in there own time and there own way
Tess is the Only person you know whose name is Tess
Tess saw you and Tess Loved you
You can never replace that and you should never try to replace that

Celebration of Life Service for Tess

Friday April, 26th, 2024
Celebration of Life Service for Tess
Rev Richard Weidler
Sam
Me

We are here for a celebration of Life
What Tess always called My Gathering
And now here you all are and I thank you

And I think, How did we get here?
Sometimes it's the Little Things that turn out to be the Big things

Little things like having friends Dave and Alice who encouraged me to visit them in Spartanburg SC
I got the job as school social worker at Cedar Springs where Tess was the school nurse
I went to an orientation class where the instructor made us laugh explaining how deaf kids communicate, as Tess would call them, the Bad Words- they have a thing called Total Communication- so you can only imagine how that went - so yes we laughed in embarrassment-we introduced ourselves and somehow arranged for a date-little things

We dated, I played catch with her son Eric. He knew every Indian tribe, every shark, every dog breed by name and characteristics. That and a million other bits of information.

Tess and I fell crazy in love and we were married by The Reverend William Ralph Carter who we called Papa.

Suddenly her Papa and Lee Lee and their Family became My Family
(brother Barry & Shirley and Michael).

I can only image poor Papa thinking OMG how did my sweet southern daughter get hooked up with this Yankee from New Jersey?
But they welcomed me in with Open Arm

That Friday night after our small family and friends wedding Tess and I jumped into my little Green Gremlin and flew down for our weekend honeymoon in Charleston.
I say flew but my Gremlin could barely reach 60. Nonetheless it was fast enough for us to get a $40 dollar speeding ticket, which he collected on the spot, so right there, half our honeymoon money was Gone.
We persevered, We took that famous horse and carriage tour of Charleston. Well we didn't so much take the carriage ride as Follow behind on our Bikes trying to hear it… uh could you please speak up?

Big things and Milestones
A year later We had our baby girl Lauren, the Happiest day of our lives,
Some 20 years later we went back to Charleston to see our girl all grown up
Graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina,
The Proudest Day of our lives
So there it is; the day we met, the day we married, the happiest days of our life
The day our baby was born, graduated and married,
The Proudest days of our life
And now, today, I know it's a celebration but forgive me,
the Saddest day of my life
Tess and I have lived such a wonderful life Together. We have been blessed in so many ways with so many friends and family, All of you here today

(Linda, Fred and Dara & Adam, Noel and Pam and Mike & Julie)
Sam and these two precious boys Nolan and Wes.

And it all began 46 years ago when I spoke these simple, yet ever more meaningful words:

Our wedding Vows
I, Peter, take thee, Tess, to be my lawfully wedded wife
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health
I promise to, Love, Cherish, Honor and
Obey
From this day forward
Till death do us part

Silence
I know, it was a lot more fun the first time- but I would like others to have a chance to share their thoughts and memories at this time

Share Thoughts - others speak
John, Marion, Phil, Skip, Debbie

Conclusion
Tess honey, my precious angel, you made all of my wildest dreams come true. You filled me with dreams I never knew I had. I'm so lucky that you found me and let me Drive you Crazy for all these years. I now I love you better than life itself.
You tried to straighten me out, tried to raise me right. But You accepted me with all my flaws and still you loved me.
You gave My Life meaning and purpose and a reason for being. We lived together through every season of love and I will learn from you, love you and honor you all the days of my life, now and forever.

 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

It’s in the title, “Life Lessons”

Pete

I really enjoyed this book even though it had nothing to do with PGN's and actual chess moves. It's a book about how to play the game of life and is filled with quotes from people who have played it well; life not necessarily chess.
I watch CBS Morning and CBS Sunday Morning and every time I see an author interviewed I perk up and check Amazon. This book qualifies in several categories including autobiography and self help. I will reengage in Chess trying to implement so of the authors insights. One is to learn from losing. For some reason I have been afraid to lose even though playing on line I don't know these people and will never meet these people. Nonetheless I play countless games against the computer but avoid the live games. I'll see if that changes but again to the book and too its author, he didn't include this quote but it's a good one, "Threre's nothing to fear but fear itself."

Brevard NC among USA TODAY 10Best Small Towns in the South

Brevard NC among USA TODAY 10Best Small Towns in the South

WNC city voted among 10 Best Small Towns in the South: Here's why

A Western North Carolina mountain town received national recognition when it was voted among the 10 Best Small Towns in the South.

Brevard, in Transylvania County, was voted ninth in the South small town category in the 2024 USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.

WNC residents may already be familiar with Brevard for its natural beauty, popular summer camps and more. It has a population of 7,744 as of April 1, 2020.

The full list of towns, each with a population of less than 25,000, was selected by an expert panel and voted on by readers to determine a top 10. The list describes the "relaxing getaways, cultural immersion, outdoor adventures and culinary delights" that make each of these towns top 10 material.

Here's the list, with some extra info on what makes Brevard so special.

The 10 best small towns to visit in the South

  1. Starkville, Mississippi
  2. Batesville, Arkansas
  3. Thomasville, Georgia
  4. West Monroe, Louisiana
  5. Maysville, Kentucky
  6. Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
  7. Sevierville, Tennessee
  8. Abingdon, Virginia
  9. Brevard, North Carolina
  10. Fairmont, West Virginia

What does the list say about Brevard?

Brevard made it into the top 10 list for a number of reasons, many of which include outdoor recreation:

'Land of Waterfalls'

Brevard is located in Transylvania County, known as the "Land of Waterfalls" due to the whopping 250 waterfalls located within its borders. This means there's a waterfall that suits just about every type of outdoor adventuring visitors - or residents - might be hoping for.

In fact, explorebrevard.com has its own top 10 list just for suggestions on which of the hundreds of waterfalls you might want to explore. Here are a few of the site's favorites:

  1. Looking Glass Falls - Look into Looking Glass Falls for the waterfall experience without the hike. Visitors can view this waterfall from an observation deck near the parking area on U.S. 276, a little less than 6 miles north of the intersection with U.S. 64 and N.C. 280 in Pisgah Forest.
  2. Upper Whitewater Falls - Whitewater is the tallest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains at 411 feet, but it's just as accessible as Looking Glass. A paved pathway takes you straight from the parking lot to the first viewing stand.
  3. Rainbow Falls - Sunlight catches the mist coming off of this 150-foot waterfall, creating the iridescent phenomenon for which the cascade is named.
  4. Triple Falls - This waterfall has a professional resume, with appearances in several hit movies including The Last of the Mohicans and The Hunger Games.
  5. Batson Falls - Another easy-access waterfall on the list, Batson includes a wheelchair accessible boardwalk to their viewing area, which offers a long range view of the 20-foot cascade that is Batson Creek Falls.
Hikers enjoy Triple Falls
