The Beatles Now and Then

The Beatles released a new song tonight called Now and Then. A new song by a group whose rise to fame was 60 years ago when we were young, when I was young, when life itself seemed young.

This song, Now and Then, would probably never have been a hit. It doesn’t have the beat and call of I want to hold your hand or She loves you or the crescendo of the Sgt Pepper Beatles. No, this is just John singing and it’s John brought to us via artificial intelligence technology. All of that is great and I love it but The Beatles were more than anything ai could ever generate. The Beatles were a form of human chemistry and energy that had never been known before and will never be known again. Thus the song Now and Then does what The Beatles had always been able to somehow do. Somehow go beyond the music, the voices, the guitars, the drums and even the hair. Somehow they, when combined, were a kind of magic. There was always the sense of a deeper meaning in their being and a message deeper than the words and so it is that I feel that magic tonight in the resurrection of this simple haunting song that John, Paul, George and Ringo are saying that there is still some magic left in this cruel and confusing world. That thier simple words and harmonies can lift us above the horrors of Viet Nam and now the war in Palestine. John wrote and performed the song Imagine. That song is so deep, so profound and so courageous and so simple. Jesus would have loved John as would Buddha as would all the truly men and woman would do because they too are more than the words or the music or the prayers, they believe in a better mankind and they try to show us the way. If we can only stop and listen long enough they remind us Now and Then.
