I never would have thought about this if it had not popped up on my YouTube feed. A beautiful song and worthy of your exploration. Did he or didn’t he? That is the question or is it as you point out. The journey is more valuable than the answer. I think one of the great attributes of The Beatles is that they maintained their identity from beginning to end. They eventually had distinctive solo careers but they honored each other within the framework of The Beatles until the end.
What your video story reveals is part of how they did that. When we first started dissecting Beatle songs each member had a distinct role that we would try to imitate. John and Paul harmonies. John rhythm, George lead, Paul bass and Ringo drums and that was that. What your in depth study reveals is that each Beatle was multitalented and could, if necessary, cover for each other. It was a collaboration and yet by mutual agreement all music would be published under the banner of The Beatles as all Lennon McCartney compositions carried that label without bowing to percentages. Was this one mostly Paul and that one mostly John? Who cares it’s Lennon and McCartney. Now what is interesting in your endeavor is that both Paul and Ringo are still with us. They could answer your query and provide an honest and comprehensive answer.
And the finished product
