From Paul’s book, The Lyrics: John and I always liked wordplay. So, the phrase ‘She’s got a ticket to ride’ of course referred to riding on a bus or train, but – if you really want to know – it also referred to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, where my cousin Betty and her husband Mike were running a pub.
Paul and John, as best friends, used to hitchhike out of town and to Paris with a few bucks in their pockets and a sense of adventure.
I hitched back and forth from college in Atlanta to home near NYC many times and sure, I have many memories of setting out with naive optimism and finding myself walking miles along a cold lonely highway in the dark endless miles of North Carolina … but I Never came up with a song. The genius of these guys never ceases to amaze me!
