When you live within an hours drive of Americas most beautiful and revered National Parkway and All-American Road you simply must traverse its mile marked blacktop and partake of its glorious vistas whenever the opportunity presents. And so we did this weekend as yet another opportunity arose to meet with our most knowledgeable NC native friends for a delicious Fresh Brook Trout luncheon, prefaced with a bowl of Pumpkin Bisque at the famous Pisgah Inn. This was a full blown Halloween Autumn Treat.
Carolyn is an avid hiker and very knowledgeable about the plant and animal life in the mountains. She patiently identified various plants like the bright red berries on this Mountain Ash and explained that the Green Lichen, seen on several trees, is not responsible for killing the trees as opposed to the Balsam and Hemlock Wooly Algid, which is.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a photographers dream. Everyone sporting a digital device from a cell phone to a Nikon and everything in between is trying to capture that perfect image to add to their photographic memories.
My beautiful wife Tess is just a wee bit camera shy but, after a little friendly persuasion, even she could not escape the camera mans lens.
Like so many tourists we wanted to see the autumn colors and we were not disappointed. Our tour of several milepost pull-offs was highlighted by the Panavistic Views (hey if Sarah Palin can invent words, I dare you to refudiate "Panavistic") at Graveyard Fields. You can see waterfalls from the road and you can hike just a few miles to see them in person. On today's visit we were satisfied to just enjoy lunch and a quick view knowing that tomorrow I can return for a more in depth visit. That is the luxury of living in Hendersonville and the Blue Ridge Parkway, with it's grandeur and diversity, will account for many more than just One of the 1 Thousand Reasons 2 Love Hendersonville.
